Talk Description: 

We might think of language as a public good – available to everyone and without restriction. But certain words have more value to and for some communities than for others. Some language is created “for us by us” – words that are meant to capture or describe experiences unique to a specific social group. But what happens when those words are stolen? When their origin is corrupted? When those words stop being used by us and for us and begin being used against us and by others? In this talk, Dr. Toole suggests that concepts and rhetoric, just like culture, can be appropriated, and why we might think that sometimes, some language just doesn’t belong to you.
