Award-winning journalist and Cherokee Nation member Rebecca Nagle will headline the Kegley Institute of Ethics’ annual Charles W. Kegley Memorial Lecture this spring.

The event, titled “Changing the Narrative: Native/Indigenous Representation in the News Media,” will be held on April 17 at 6 p.m. in the Doré Theatre. The lecture is free and open to the public. It will also be livestreamed.

“We are thrilled to bring the award-winning journalist Rebecca Nagle to campus,” said Interim KIE Director Dr. Nate Olson. “Nagle’s journalism, including her critically acclaimed podcast “This Land,” has helped bring overdue attention to issues affecting indigenous communities. Her campus visit and lecture will highlight the vibrancy of indigenous communities both locally and nationally.”

Nagle’s writing on the issues of Native representation, federal Indian law and tribal sovereignty has been featured in outlets including The Atlantic, the Washington Post, USA Today and Indian Country Today. Her first book, “By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land,” will be published this fall.

Nagle is the recipient of the American Mosaic Journalism Prize, the largest cash prize for journalism in the U.S. She has also received the Exceptional Journalism Award from the Women’s Media Center and several awards from the Native American Journalist Association.

She was named one of the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development’s Native American 40 Under 40 in 2016 for her work supporting survivors and advocate for policy change to address violence against Native women.
