Kegley Institute’s Fall Lecture to feature Dr. Manuel Pastor
The Kegley Institute of Ethics (KIE) has announced that University of Southern California Professor Manuel Pastor will headline this year’s Fall Lecture.
The event will be held on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Doré Theatre. Dr. Pastor — who teaches sociology, American studies and ethnicity at USC — will speak about the importance of equity and building community amid a changing America. The lecture is free and open to the public.
In addition to his teaching, Dr. Pastor is the director of USC’s Equity Research Institute and the inaugural holder of the Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change. His research focuses on the economic, environmental and social challenges facing low-income urban communities and the movements seeking to remove those obstacles.
Dr. Pastor — who holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst — has been a co-author of several books, including “Solidarity Economics: Why Mutuality and Movements Matter” and “South Central Dreams: Finding Home and Building Community in South L.A.”
The lecture is just one of the events that the Kegley Institute is hosting this fall, many of which share a common theme.
“Many of our events this fall address the issue of community — how we at CSUB and in Kern County can create a community that is equitable and in which all feel welcomed,” said KIE Director Dr. Nate Olson.
